Follow these steps to apply for financial aid:

STEP 1:  Each year, the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be completed.  If this is the first time the student or parent has filed the FAFSA, the student and one parent must apply for a FSA ID number.  Students/parents can apply for ID number at https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm, so that you have it when you apply for financial aid after Oct. 1st.  Be sure to use separate e-mail addresses for student and parent applications.

STEP 2: Fill out the FAFSA application on-line at http://fafsa.ed.gov.    Students can begin their application after Oct. 1st for the following college school year.   Don't forget both student and parent FSA ID numbers!  Fax information  can be linked to your application by using the data retrieval tool on the FAFSA form.

IMMEDIATELY following filing the FAFSA - residents of NYS should click the link to the TAP-on-the-web application to apply for New York State Aid.  The link will be on  the  bottom of your confirmation page  once you have submitted your FAFSA application. The TAP application will be pre-filled with information from your FAFSA.  TAP is for NYS financial aid.   If you do not fill out this application immediately upon completion of the FAFSA, visit the HESC website and follow the links to complete this application.

STEP 3:  After completing the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) within about 5 days via email.  If you did not submit an email address you will receive a paper copy within about 2 weeks of filing your FAFSA online.  Review the SAR very carefully for accuracy.  If there are changes or errors, you should return to the FAFSA and make corrections!
